DbP theme and computing history: old look, new structure

26 October 2026 — project status at publication

Since the first installation report in 2023, work has shifted towards the interface and its tools. The DbP theme is getting a consistent Workstation 2000 look with grey windows, Borland influences and layouts for 80, 132 and 160 columns.

Computing history is now in the wiki

At publication, the German history collection and its English counterpart each contained 164 sourced events: 160 entries across 140 calendar dates and four known only to the month.

Each populated day has its own page. Month overviews link to every day, including 29 February, so missing entries can be researched. Month-only events are separate and are not repeated daily as filler.

Topics include BBS networks, DOS and Windows, Novell and Mono, Be/Haiku, ARM, IPv4/IPv6, Wi-Fi, PowerShell and JavaScript tools. Sources accompany the entries.

What was ready and what came next

The theme was still being tested in a limited preview. Wiki publication was complete, while the BBS still read computing-history entries from local TXT files at that time. Austrian history was already fetched from ÖsterreichWiki.

mysticd and DbP Relay remained separate planned projects. Work would continue in small, reviewable steps. For the current status, see the project overview.

Setting up Mystic BBS in an LXC container

4 January 2023 — historical installation report

The setup of Mystic BBS in an LXC container is beginning. I am following “The Mystic Guy” videos to learn about the system and preparing a how-to for Debian 11. It covers systemd startup scripts, running as an unprivileged user and maintenance tasks. Log files have dated names and links to the standard filenames, for example mutil.yyyymmdd.log and mutil.log, updated by an MIS event at midnight. Fail2ban integration is also part of the work. I am looking for a way to export Mystic performance data to Grafana.

Before finishing the configuration inside the BBS, I want to get the background tasks in order.

Ideas at the time included Zabbix monitoring, Prometheus/Grafana metrics, Proxmox Backup Server and SMS notifications through a USB GSM modem and smsd.

This report records the 2023 setup, not the current installation procedure. See the project pages for current development.

About this wiki

We improve the theme and its tools in small, tested steps. mysticd and DbP Relay are separate projects; their planned service features are not finished products.

Blog posts document the state at their publication date. Current information belongs on the project pages. The 2023 installation report remains part of the project's history.
